Can’t watch video? Here is a transcript of the audio.
In this tutorial, I will simply be going over the technical instructions on how to add new pages to your website. In the add new posts tutorial, in both part one and part two, I went very indepth on how to get the most out of the content at your website. I go over providing powerful copy in your titles and first paragraphs in order to attract as many customers as possible from your search engine listing.
As this system is far more powerful for search engine optimisation and converting visitors into customers than any website builder you will even find out there, and more than some website designers will build for you, it would be a shame for you not to make the most of everything it has to offer.
If you have not seen the Add New Posts tutorial, I highly recommend you see it, even if you are not adding any new posts to the homepage of your website. There is important information I won’t go over again in fear of boring those who have watched all the tutorials, but I do suggest you watch it at least once.
As I have mentioned in the previous tutorials, the homepage of your website has been put together as a post so you are easily able to add new content to your homepage. This makes it very easy to rotate your homepage content with whatever is happening with your business. The rest of the site however, is put together as pages.
So let’s go ahead and type in wp-admin to the end of your domain name once again. This brings you to your login screen. Then enter your username and password. This brings you to the dashboard of the backend of your website.
Here at the dashboard, you will find the option ‘Add New’ under your pages menu. Let’s go ahead and click this now. You will now find yourself with a blank page to post your new content to your website.
First of all, I am going to give this new page a very meaningful title. As mentioned in the add new pages tutorial, you want to be putting your best keywords you wish to rank for in your titles. For the content, I have some text here to demonstrate, so I am just going to cut and paste into the textarea provided. You will concentrate on adding meaningful content to your pages for the search engines to pick up, especially in the first paragraph, as this is what we use later to add to your search engine listing.
Next you may wish to add an image to this post. You are able to add any type of media here you wish, but you are most likely to only want to add images at this stage. Clicking on this little icon here will bring up this add an image box for you to drop pictures into your new page.
Just as discussed in the add new posts video, you want to add a meaningful title to your image. You can also add a caption for your image, and also a description if required.
Next you are able to insert the link URL . If you wish the image to link to another site, you can place the URL you wish to link to here. Or, you can link to the file, which will open the image into a new window, or you can link to the post the image is stored in. If you are unsure, leave it blank. It will then default to the post the image is stored in. Next, you can either have it align Left, Centre or Right, or no alignment at all.
Finally, you can choose the size you wish the image to be within the post. You can choose small, medium, large or full size. Medium is a good size to fit within your pages, so I always choose medium.
Now click insert into page, and the image will appear in your page. Repeat with any other images you wish to add.
In previous tutorials, I went over the options provided in the WYSIWYG editor. If you hover over any of these options, an information box will appear to advise you of what the icons mean.
If you wish to format any of the text into a link, go ahead and highlight the text you wish to create as a website link. Up here in the WYSIWYG editor, you will see a little link icon. Click this, and a text box will appear. Format the link as discussed previously, then you can go ahead and insert your link into your page.
Now, if we start to scroll down the page, here, under the discussion tab, you have thje option to ‘Allow comments on this post.’ I usually leave this option ticked on the posts to encourage discussion, but with pages, you may not wish to include this option. On your privacy policy, terms and conditions pages, or your contact us page for example, you are probably not going to want visitors to comment. If you don’t want visitors commenting on your pages for any reason, leave Allow Comments unticked.
If you scroll down the page a little you will come to the page menu editor. This is where you can add the text that appears on the menu at your website. If you don’t add a Page Menu Label, the page label will default to the title of your page. As you don’t have a huge amount of room, either in the top or side menus, you may wish to shorten the label it appears under here.
For example, say your page title was: ‘Amazing blue widgets. Check our our unique range of blue widgets here.’ You may just wish your page title to appear as Blue Widgets. This should give your customers the right idea, while your long amazing blue widgets title is still indexed in the search engines.
The next very important option for you to fill in is the All in One SEO Pack. I go very indepth into how important this option is in the Add New Pages tutorial. This fills in the title you find at the top of your page (one of the most important ranking factors), the description that shows in the search engine results and the keywords to tell the search engines what this page is about. This is where you get to choose what is going to show up in the listing for your business in the search engine results.
Because I have spent quite some time explaining the importance of this previously, I won’t bore you with it again if you have seen the previous tutorials. If you haven’t, I do suggest you see the Add New Pages tutorial at some stage.
For now, up here on the right you have a couple more options available to you on the pages. With the Attributes option, you are able to set where in the top menu your new page will appear. This is if you wish it to appear in the top menu at all. If you wish it to appear 1st on the top menu, you would put a 1 in this box. If you wish it to appear second, you would put 2. And so on.
The next option is whether or not you want to include this page in the top menu at all. For example, you may wish for this page to appear only in your side menu.
In this case you would untick ‘Include this page in user menus.’ This would mean this page would not appear in your top menu at all. You will then be able to add it to the side menu using the NAVT lists, which you will learn about in an upcoming tutorial.
So go ahead and click the publish page button you see here.
So that’s it. All you need to know to add new pages to your website. Once again, if any of this is unclear, or you need to go through it with me, please feel free to let me know on any of the numbers at www.FreeWebsiteDesign.co.nz, or Aliarts.co.nz.
