How to Add New Posts to Your Free Website
Welcome back to tutorial 3 in the series. This tutorial is a little longer than the others, as it provides you with a valuable information base on how to get the most out of the website we have created for you here at Aliarts. You can always come back and view the transcript if you need to go over any of the main points. Due to this, the tutorial is split into two parts. This is part one of the tutorial for adding new posts to the homepage of your website.

Can’t watch video? Here is a transcript of the audio.
Just as before, go ahead and type in wp-admin to the end of your domain name. This will bring you to your login screen. Enter the username and password we sent you right back in your introductory email. This will bring you to your dashboard of the backend of your website.
Now the way we have set the website up is so your homepage is put together as a post. This makes it very easy to rotate your homepage content with whatever is happening with your business. This is very important for search engine optimisation, as the search engines absolutely love content, so the more often you update this page, the more often the search engine spiders will visit your website. You want to show them you are an important source of new information, and this (amongst a range of other factors we put in place for you) will help you rank higher in a search.
Let’s visit the website now, by right clicking on visit site, and selecting open in new tab. You will see I have added a new menu, under which all of your homepage posts can be found. Your latest post will be able to be viewed at the homepage, while the rest of your posts can be found under the menu I have created for you here.
If you click on this link I have titled ‘latest news,’ you will find an archive of all your homepage posts, dating back for as long as you have been adding new content. For now, there is just one, as this is the one we have added for you with the content you provided. This shows up under this submenu as a excerpt of the post that is now displayed at the homepage.
As you add more posts, more excerpts will start to show up in the list, and display as an archive of everything that has been happening lately in your business. In these posts you can add links to pages where customers can find the information they require about your products, or anything you wish to share with them. In a later video about the NAVT Lists, I will show you how to create these menus, where you can easily add new posts, pages and categories informing customers about new products, prices or anything you wish to get the word out about.
Leave this tab open, so you can switch between your edit screen and your website to refresh and view your changes.
So let’s go ahead and add a new post to the homepage of your website.
Back at the dashboard, you will find the option ‘Add New’ under your posts menu. Let’s go ahead and click this now.
You will now find yourself with a fresh post in which you are able to add new content to the homepage of your website.
First of all, I am going to give this new post a very meaningful title, as this is what is going to be picked up by the search engines as a very important factor in where they choose to rank you in a search. Without going into too much confusing detail, behind the scenes in the code of your website, the headings on your page are formatted using special tags, which also tell the search engines this text is very important. You want to be putting your best keywords you wish to rank for in your titles.
To show you exactly what I mean about ranking factors and being ranked in a search, let’s go over to Google. For example, if you own a bakery in St Albans in Christchurch, you may wish to rank in the search engines for the search phrase “Bakery St Albans Christchurch.”
As you will see, Kidds Cakes, A Bakery of the year website and other assorted websites dominate the first page of Google for this phrase. As many people don’t even venture past the first page of search results, if you own a Bakery in St Albans Christchurch, this is where you want to be.
If you need more help with keyword research for your business, please feel free to check out our keyword research video later in the series, where we go far more indepth into how to research the correct keywords in order for your business to be found in the search engines.
Now I have given this post a meaningful title, this will be your version of Bakery in St Albans Christchurch, I have some text here I have prepared earlier, so I am just going to cut and paste into the textarea provided.
You would want to open this post with a powerful first paragraph, getting right to the meat and potatoes of your offer. You want to capture the interest of the customer, and keep them reading. You want to be making your biggest promise to the custmer in your title and first paragraph, letting them know in no uncertain terms you have what they need, or you can provide the service they require.
This paragraph is also what will be used in the search engine listing, but more about this later in the tutorial.
Next you may wish to add an image to this post, of your products, your business, staff, or anything you wish to show. You are able to add video and audio here as well, but you are most likely to only want to add images at this stage. As you get better at managing the system, you will find you are able to add other forms of media in much the same fashion as I am about to show you.
You add images by clicking on this little icon here. This will bring up this add an image box for you to drop pictures into your post.
First of all , you are going to want to add a meaningful title to your image. In fact, anywhere anything is called ‘Title,’ you are going to want to place your keywords here, as this is what is going to be indexed by the search engines. In the next line, you can add a caption for this image, and also a description.
Next comes the link URL. If you wish the image to link to another site, you can place the link URL in this textarea. Or, you can link to the file, which will open the image into a new window, or you can link to the post the image is stored in. If you are unsure, leave it blank.
Next we have the alignment. You can either have it align Left, Centre or Right, or no alignment at all. I will choose left, with the text wrapping around it.
Finally, you can choose the size you wish the image to be within the post. You can choose small, medium, large or full size. For this example, I will choose medium.
Click, insert into post, and the image will appear in your post. Repeat this step with any other images you wish to add.
So let’s go over some of the options provided in the WYSIWYG editor.
Say for example you wish to format this paragraph in bold or italics, then left or right align, you will find this all here above where you add your text. If you hover over any of these options, an information box will appear to advise you of what the icons mean.
And this concludes part one of the tutorial to show you how to add new posts and make the most out of the website we have created for you here at Alisrt. Please join me in part two, where I will show you how to add links, and introduce you to how to format the text that will show in the search engine slistings. Very important for getting potential clients to click in and visit your website.
Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in part two.
