How to Edit the Pages for the Free Website Builder

Hi there, it’s Lesley here again from FreeWebsiteDesign.co.nz, a project brought to you by Aliarts Website Marketing. Welcome back to tutorial four in the series, how to edit the existing pages of your website.

Visit Free Website Design to view in high quality.

Can’t watch video? Here is a transcript of the audio.

Once again, go ahead and type in wp-admin to the end of your domain name. This will bring you to your login screen. Enter the username and password we sent you right back in your introductory email. This will bring you to your dashboard of the backend of your website.

As you have learned in the preceeding tutorials, the home page of your website has been put together as a post, so you can easily add fresh content to your website. The rest of your site is put together as pages, as this is a more permanent way for your content to stay in place within the system.

So let’s go over to your pages menu and click on the edit button to bring up the existing posts we have dropped in for you. Let’s visit the website now, by right clicking on visit site, and selecting open in new tab. We will visit the page we’re about to edit, so we are able to refresh and view the changes whenever we are ready.

Editing the pages is done in very much the same fashion as editing the posts. So back at your dashboard, hover over the title of the page you wish to edit, and click the edit link. This will open the page you wish to edit into a new window.

Much like we talked about in the edit posts tutorial, you are able to format the text in any way you like, change the colour, insert bullet points and do just about anything you can do with Word or in your e-mails. You may wish to add an image to this post, of your business or your staff, or anything you wish to show. You go about this by clicking on these icons here, just like we discussed in the new posts tutorial. We will also go into this further in the new pages tutorial coming up next in the series.

Once the changes to the page have been made there are a few other page options you may be considering changing, that are different to how the posts are formatted. For example if you scroll down the page a little you will come to the page menu editor. This is where you can change the text that appears on the menu at your website

As an example, say you wanted to change the about text, to about us, the page menu editor is where you would make this change. Simply type in the new Page Menu Label into the textarea.

The next option you have is to change the Page Link Title Attribute. Like we discussed in the new posts tutorial, this is what will appear when your customer hovers over a link on your website, like so. You want to pack as many keywords as possible into any title you are able to, so place something meaningful about where the page is going here as well.

Once again we have the All in One SEO Pack which we learnt about in the previous tutorial. This is the title and description that appear for your website in the search engine listings. You may wish to make changes to these, but as mentioned previously this may take some time to show up in the search engine listings results.

Up here on the right you have a couple more options available to you with the pages. Here you are able to change the order the pages appear in the menu. For example say you wanted the about us page to appear after the contact us page, you would enter three here in the order. This will ensure the About Us page appears third.

The next option is whether or not you want to include this page and the top menu at all. For example, you may wish for this page to appear over here in your side menu instead. In this case you would untick ‘Include this page in user menus.’ this would mean this page would not appear in your top menu, and you can easily add it to the side menu is using the NAVT lists, which you will learn about in an upcoming tutorial.

There are a couple of other options available to you for your pages but as we have already put these in place for you, I will introduce them in the next tutorial, how to add new pages to your website.

As we are just editing for now, we can go ahead and click update page.

So let’s have a look at our edited page. You can see I have quickly and easily made the changes I wanted within the dashboard.

Once again, if any of this is unlcear, or you need to go through it with me, please feel free to let me know on any of the numbers at www.FreeWebsiteDesign.co.nz, or Aliarts.co.nz.

Thanks again, and I’ll see you in the next tutorial.
